Why I value my time a trustee

I can’t quite remember the reason I put myself forward as a trustee, possibly because I am nosey and I wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes! I do know that I am so glad that I did. The last couple of years have been genuinely lovely, not only have I learned a lot I have also had the chance to team up with some amazing people who bring with them this wealth of knowledge. I sit in our meetings in awe of everyone’s passion and abilities in their own little corners of urology.

From the moment I became a trustee I was welcomed into the team and I have enjoyed every second of it. Of course it can be challenging at times as we all work full time roles and have family lives so the need to juggle things around becomes a necessity sometimes due to having to accommodate meetings in your own time.

The meetings themselves are always really enlightening and leave you feeling as though you have learned something. I would definitely recommend being a trustee.

Why I have a passion for urology

Urology was the first placement I had as a student nurse. A TURP was the first ever surgical procedure I saw so I guess I have come full circle after many years working in oncology. After having my children I decided to go for a role in research, the hours seemed to fit around the kids and it meant I had my weekends free to be with family. I applied for the role of a research nurse in urology and after 13 years I have not looked back.  Urology is one of those area’s that can span all areas of a person’s life and with that I have to say it has certainly kept my interest. Being a research nurse I am lucky to work within all the different areas of urology so rather than specialise in one I am very happy to say that I am jack of all trades and know a little about a lot of things!

Being part of BAUN as both a trustee and member has given so many networking opportunities. These opportunities come in many different forms, being at conference, study days and presenting across the country. Being around so many people who are passionate about urology is so refreshing and it’s been amazing to hear people’s story’s about how they ended up in urology and also enhances my current role.
